China Won’t Betray Russia Over Ukraine

China has tried to portray itself as being neutral in the Ukraine-Russia conflict, even going so far as to suggest it could play the role of mediator between the two countries. But a close look at China’s actions and rhetoric shows it’s very much in Russia’s camp, which isn’t a surprise given Chinese leader Xi Jinping’s close friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In this episode of China Unscripted, we look at the the Russia-China relationship, the limitations of the Putin-Xi friendship, and how the US is working with the EU on China. Joining us in this episode is Mareike Ohlberg, a senior fellow in the Asia Program of The German Marshall Fund and co-author of the book Hidden Hand: Exposing How the Chinese Communist Party Is Reshaping the World.
