China has been working on building up relationships with leaders all around the US, and part of that is through investment deals. A Chinese think tank published a map of all 50 US states that ranked each one based on friendliness to China. While the US isn’t officially a part of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), China often uses investment deals or the promise of them to create a relationship with state and local leaders. Joining us in this episode is Emily de la Bruyere, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and the co-author of the new monograph All Over the Map: The Chinese Communist Party’s Subnational Interests in the United States.
