Does Taiwan want to be closer to the US? It may seem obvious that Taiwan, officially the Republic of China, would want the protection of being a US ally, but it could also potentially put Taiwan in danger. China has calibrated its whole foreign policy machine around convincing the world that Taiwan is part of China, despite Taiwan obviously being an independent country. What would China do if countries like the US started to recognize Taiwan as an independent country?
