Protests in China Are Growing But Not Organized

Because the Chinese Communist Party has so many ways to monitor Chinese citizens, organizing a protest without being caught is difficult. For that reason, many protests in China are not organized ahead of time, but instead spring up spontaneously, often inspired by another protest. In this episode of China Unscripted, we talk about “real name complaint” protests, how protests are spreading online, and China’s official petitioning system. Joining us in this episode is Kevin Slaten, the research lead for China Dissent Monitor.
