Russian President Vladimir Putin has put Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert, and there are many analysts who say Russia could use tactical nuclear weapons. It’s threats like this, as well as Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, that remind us why militaries matter. In this episode of China Unscripted, we talk about how Americans view the US military, what implications this has for geopolitics, and how Putin has (hopefully) been a wakeup call for the West on the importance of a strong military as deterrence. Joining us in this episode is retired US Navy Commander Paul Giarra. He managed the US-Japan alliance for the office of the Secretary of Defense, and helped create the global strategy for the US Navy at the end of the Cold War.
