China has been claiming for years that it seeks a peaceful rise. That claim is wearing thin after the takeback of Hong Kong, the threats against Taiwan, and recently the arrest then release of 2 Canadians living in China. In this episode of China Unscripted, we explore how the Canadians’ detention after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was detained in Canada at the US’s request further tarnished China’s reputation as a country that adheres to rule of law or seeks a peaceful rise. We are joined in this podcast by Fen Hampson, the chancellor’s professor at Carleton University and president of the World Refugee & Migration Council, and Mike Blanchfield, the international affairs writer for The Canadian Press. They are the authors of the book: The Two Michaels: Innocent Canadian Captives and High Stakes Espionage in the US-China Cyber War.
